One of the best ways you can cultivate your life energy and spiritual force is through the practice of qi gong. Qi gong is a practice of movement that gathers the external qi or energy of the heaven (cosmos) and the earth and refines that qi/energy through the practice of movements and the internal life force of the practitioner. It can be applied to:
help a person master their internal energy
create better physical, mental, and emotional health
cultivate creativity and imagination
build up energetic reservoirs
help you dissolve energetic and somatic blockages
All of these things can be experienced through a dedicated and committed qi going practice.

What does that practice look like?
Ideally it’s a daily qi gong practice, where you are engaged in some type of practice each day to help you work with your internal energy, and practice directing and focusing it. For example, I’ve been learning Kung Fu, which draws on qi gong as a core practice. The dedicated exploration of qi gong has helped me with the kung fu practices I’m learning because I already have a sense of how to work with the internal energy and I can see how to integrate it into my movements.
You don’t have to necessarily get involved with a martial discipline to learn qi gong. The benefit is that the martial discipline teaches you an external application of the qi gong practice that shows you how the cultivation of the energy marries itself to your movements.
Master your internal energy
When I refer to internal energy, I’m referring to your physical well-being, your emotional experience, creative expression, but also to the spiritual energy connection to the life force of your being. Your internal energy can take many forms and your ability to master it is essential.
Many people are scattered with their energy. They don’t know how to breathe properly, their thoughts scatter all over the place and they are leaky when it comes to their emotions. Their sense of creativity is hijacked by society and all the distractions that come with it.
It doesn’t have to be that way, but in order to master your internal energy you have to be willing to take on practices that shape and refine your consciousness and give you the necessary focus you need to create the life you want to live.
One way you can start to master your internal energy is through meditation, which is part of qi gong practice. Create better physical, mental, and emotional health
One of the reasons I practice qi gong moving meditation each day is because it allows me to scan my body on multiple levels, while doing the movements, so I can address areas where I’m out of alignment with my health.
When I talk about health, I’m not just talking about your physical health, but also the emotional, creative and spiritual health of the person. When I am practicing qi gong, I can check in with myself and explore how in tune I am with the overall health of my being. I am learning to listen to my body, my energy and my beingness through the practice of qi gong.
Recently my rib was bruised in a boxing match. It hurt to lay down or move, because of the bruising. It can take some time to heal an injury like that, but it is possible to expedite the process of healing.
I chose to use qi gong to help me heal my bruised rib. I used Cloud Hands and the Marriage of Heaven and Earth to circulate the bad qi out of my body, while cultivating the good qi. I did this for 15-20 minutes each day and it helped me heal my rib so that by the second week, the pain had gone away substantially.
What’s your number one challenge with your health?
Cultivate creativity and imagination
When you think of qi gong, you may think of it as a physical or energetic practice, but it is more than that. It is also a practice for cultivating your creativity and imagination. When I am doing my practice, it frees my mind to rest and be.
Society often tries to separate the mind and the body, without fully appreciating that any such separation is artificial and often put in place to disempower people. To come back into the fullness of presence we must necessarily give our mind a chance to fully sit in the body. Qi-gong is one way to do this and allow you to cultivate the creativity and imagination in the process.
I often find that my mind comes up with some insights and ideas after I’ve done qi gong and this acts as a form of liberation because the qi gong has relaxed the mind and released the thoughts.
Build up energetic reservoirs
Another reason to practice Qi Gong is that it can help you build up your internal energetic batteries. We have a certain amount of life force. We can build it up and make it last longer by engaging in practices that allow us to move both the body and the energy.
The circulation of qi is essential to our well being. When I do a qi gong practice I am drawing the energy of the heaven and pulling in the environmental energy around me. I refine these energies through my movements and merge them with my own energy. This allows me to wash out the impurities that may create ill health down the line. It nourishes the fullness of my being and builds up the energy so I have it to draw on in times of challenge.
Dissolve Energetic and Somatic Blockages
The circulation of qi dissolves the blockages and tension with in the body, on all levels. On the physical level it can release aches and pains, while on the subtle level it relaxes the emotional and mental tension and stress that can occupy our being. On the spiritual level, it invites in the alignment with the natural energies around us and allows us to feed our spirit.
We can dissolve blockages inward or outward, but either way it may release what we no longer need to hold onto and in the process help us redirect the energy that has been occupied in ways that haven’t been fully healthy for us.
When I marry heaven and earth through qi gong movements, it opens the subtle levels of my being and allows me to access the deeper mysteries of this miracle called life.
